Mangaluru: The Department of Community Medicine – Kanachur Institute of Medical Sciences on the behest of Cancer Prevention Month has reached out to the community at large in an attempt to create mass awareness – in lines of prevention of disease, generating preparedness and ensure the right progress of understanding of this dreaded non-communicable disease. The results have been fruitful with a positive response in all sections. The students and faculty of KIMS has an active role to play as messengers against this disease.
The Itinerary planned
22nd Feb: Oral Cancer Screening among industrial workers with the Dental Team.
24th Feb: Walk of Hope for a Cancer Free Society – Walkathon
25th Feb – 2nd March: FREE Breast & Cervical Cancer Screening with Dept of OBG.
27th Feb: Orientation to ASHA workers on importance of Cancer screening.
In commemoration of the Cancer Awareness Month, on February 27, a program was held at Kanachur Hospital (Main Lobby) where Dr Sushma Adappa, NCD Consultant, Dakshina Kannada was the chief guest. K.G. Kiran, HOD, Community Medicine, Kanachur Institute of Medical Sciences, Dr Deviprasad Shetty, Medical Superintendent, Kanachur Institute of Medical Sciences & Dr Rohan Monis, Chief Administrative Medical Officer, Kanachur Institute of Medical Sciences were present on the dais.
The 6th term MBBS students surprised everyone with a flash mob which was truly entertaining and the expressions were artistic. Dr (Col.) K.G. Kiran welcomes the dignitaries on the dais and the gathering, lauding all efforts put by his team and students. This was followed by a street play which was well organized. It depicted the evils of the society leading to cancer and how prevention is the mainstay.
Dr Sushma Adappa, District NCD Consultant, cheered the students for their amazing effort and stressed on the fact that the government has implemented measures into diseases like Hypertension, Diabetes and Stroke. Prevention is the key and she wished the Kanachur Leadership Team all success.
Abdul Rahiman released the new logo of the Dept of Community Medicine, KIMS. Dr Sushma released the new youtube channel of Dept of Community Medicine, KIMS where all activities, community, preventive, social would be aired for the benefit of the community at large. Dr Raja Shekar, Asst Prof, Dept of Community Medicine, KIMS had taken this initiative and encouraged the students for the same.
Dr Rohan Monis, CAMO, KHRC stressed in the fact that early detection of cancer is the key. He encouraged all to be the ambassadors of prevention and get themselves and their families screened. With early detection and screening there is a clear advantage of early treatment and there is no loss of life & this is the only way forward.
Mr Abdul Rahiman, Director, KIMS in his presidential address lauded Dr Kiran for his efforts into leading his dynamic team and students into creating his massive movement. These programs help in all round development of a budding doctor and the need for a wider approach was encouraged.
Dr Raja Shekar had organized competitions for the students in Quiz and Ad film and the prize distribution was held. The winners are:
