Mangaluru: “Science must teach humanity along”, said Prof K J Rao, Scientist and IISc professor during the sixth fundation day lecture on ‘Advances in Science and Technology – A new Civilizational Challenge’ here at St Joseph’s college of Engineering on February 11.

Rao, Emeritus Professor, Ramanna Fellow (Senior), Solid State and Structural Chemistry Unit at the Indian Institute of Science, addressing the students and the professors, said, “Amount of change in science and technology is incredible. Soon the ‘Internet of Light’ LiFi will soon join WiFi. Recent tests have found LiFi that it can operate st s speed of 224 gigabits per second. At this rate one can dowload 1.5 GB in a sigle second, which far outfaces the WiFi.”

Speaking further, he said that there are satellites on the space which are dead and alive. There are almost 1200 satellites operating and several of them are dead. Today space industry is developing rapidly. India even launched 20 satellites at one go and these are giant leaps of technology in India and US. Surface travel is faster than planes and super computers and quantum computing will took happen in next 10 years. ” He also spoke about another disruptive technology that is 3D Printing. In 3D Printing one can make a virtual design of the object to be created using CAD(Computer Aided Design) file using a 3D modelling. Researches have been made at Carolina where they are working on printing skin where a camera scans a wound to cretate a 3D image, and then new skin is printed right into the burn. Researchers are even working on creating the complex organ namely liver with their 3D printers.

He further said, “the new world of Drones is fascinating and frightening. Google and Amazon are planning to deliver consumer packages by Drone. Even the self driven cars or automobiles are also a challenge to manpower. Over 1.6 million people will be out of job due to this. Robots have been appointed at hospitals. Robot outperforms the best human surgeon and it is said more than 45 million soft tissue surgeries are performed in US alone each year. Even the advancement in IOT(Internet Of Things) is rapid like fitness tracker, smart home devices and brand new car loaded with apps etc. Even IOT is introduced in agriculture. The Artificial Intelligence(AI) is challenging humans in sophisticated jobs. Soon Chemists will be designed by AI and due to this present type of banks will be hit and make way for digital banking services. It will also introduce us to usage of Biticoin currency or the digital money or virtual money.

Quoting renowned philospher scientist like Stephen Hawking who is worried about Artificial Intelligence opined that the development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race.

The Artificial Intelligence will make masons, sales persons, radio operators, cashiers, real estate brokers, cooks and several others jobless. The advancement in technology will then lead to introduction of Universal Basic Income, it is fixed amount given by the state to all its citizens, he added.

He concluded by saying that science must teach humanity along. He also lauded the discipline and dedication of St Joseph college in the field of education. He also shared some of his memories during the interaction.

Prior to the chief guest address, he was introduced by Professor Rajesh Kumar and director Rev Fr Joseph Lobo welcomed.
