SJEC Workshop on Business Model Canvas is about Fin Aspect of business mgmt

Mangaluru: The Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering at St Joseph Engineering College (SJEC), Mangaluru hosted a Three-day workshop on Business Model Canvas from 4 to 6 April 2022 at the campus. The tailored hands-on workshop was attended by engineering and management students as well as faculty members who had a walkthrough of the Business Model Canvas and its implications with an emphasis on the financial aspects of running successful businesses. 

Dr Dasharathraj K Shetty, Associate Professor at the Humanities Department of MIT Manipal, and Sathyendra Bhat, Placement Officer & Head of Training and Placement at SJEC, Mangaluru conducted the intriguing sessions over the course of 3 days.

Inaugurating the workshop Dr Rio D’Souza, Principal of SJEC stressed the need for Engineers and Managers to be multi-disciplinary. He said it is quintessential even for engineering faculty to be well versed with business plans as a good proportion of graduating students look for Entrepreneurship as a career choice. He opined that such events can indeed go a long way in aiding the entrepreneurial ecosystem at the institution.

Dr Dayakshini, Head of the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering spoke about the shift in the industry and the need for students to be accustomed to financial nomenclatures and business models to excel in reputed industry-sponsored engineering championships and seed funding pitches. 

In his Presidential address, Rev. Fr Wilfred Prakash D’Souza, Director of SJEC said that Business Model Canvas aids businesses to look beyond spreadsheets, market research, and financial projections and is used even by tech giants like Microsoft, GE to give a competitive edge to products. Also present for the inauguration were Rev. Fr Alwyn Richard D’Souza, Assistant Director of SJEC, and the organizing secretary Glenson Toney. 

Dr Dasharathraj Shetty facilitated the conduction of the workshop on the first 2 days wherein he spoke about converting an idea into an invention and stressed the need to innovate to make it a product viable in the market through several examples and group activities. Sathyendra Bhat took over the proceedings on the last day through a case study on the Business Model Canvas.

The workshop drew to a close with the Business Model Canvas pitch presentation which was judged by Dr Anjali Ganesh, Professor, Department of MBA, SJEC. The models presented by Akhtar Ahsan Sayeed from Mechanical Engineering and Ms Nireeksha Shetty from MBA-IEV bagged the credit of being the Best Pitch of the workshop. 

In concluding the workshop, the organizing secretary Glenson Toney spoke about how Business Canvas can aid in engineering and management projects. The workshop supported by the SJEC Management had over 25 participants from engineering and management streams participate and get the know-how of the Business Model Canvas.
