St Aloysius College releases ‘Eudricompost’

Mangaluru: The department of Zoology at St. Aloysius college on Tuesday, June 25 released a product of vermicompost called “Eudricompost” at the Al-Vermi bin, the vermicompost unit of the college. The Rector, Rev. Fr. Dionysius Vaz SJ, The Principal Rev. Fr. Praveen Martis SJ, Finance officer Rev. Fr. Vincent Pinto, Former head of the department Dr. Precilla D’Silva, Director of Xavier block, Dr. John Edward D’Silva and Dr. Hemachandra, head of the department of Zoology were present at the release. The students and faculty members too were present at the occasion.

Why “Eudricompost”?
The vermicompost unit, ‘Al-Vermi bin’ at St.Aloysius College was inaugurated on December 12th, 2018 at the annual sports meet of the college. The organic waste from the college and the surroundings was dumped here and with the help of an earthworm species, Eudrilus Eugeniae, the compost was generated. It has been around 6 months since the first product “Eudricompost” was released, the name owing to the earthworm species Eudrilus Eugeniae, popularly known as the African nightcrawler.
This product is available for students and faculty members of the institution. “We will be really happy to make it available for purposes like gardening to the general public”, says Dr.Hemachandra, Head of the Department of Zoology.
