Mangaluru: St Joseph Engineering College (SJEC), Mangaluru, recently inaugurated its Eco Club for the year 2019-20. The inauguration was done by watering some saplings.
Dr Smitha Hedge, Professor at Centre for Science Education and Research, Nitte University, was the chief guest during the programme.
After inaugurating the programme, Dr Hegde spoke about the importance of balancing the ecosystem and minimizing the carbon footprint. She said that if humans destroy the ecosystem, plants may end up destroying the humans one day. She also delivered an informative talk on Geo-Tagging of Plants.
Dr Vincent Crasta, in-charge principal and HOD of Physics Department at SJEC, said that in addition to technical education, students should also study the nature around them and help to preserve the ecosystem.
Rev. Fr Wilfred Prakash D’Souza, Director of SJEC, spoke about Greta Thunberg at the climate action summit and said that every human has the responsibility to save the environment.
Harshitha from III year CSE welcomed the gathering and introduced the chief guest. President of the Eco Club, Olsten D’Souza from III year Mechanical Engineering, proposed the vote of thanks.
Rev. Fr Rohith D’Costa and Rev. Fr Alwyn Richard D’Souza, Assistant Directors of SJEC, Rakesh Lobo, HR Manager of SJEC, Ajithanjaya Kumar M K, Chairperson of Community Engagement Group and Ashwin Shetty, Head of the Eco Club were also present.
