Yenepoya NSS personnel participate in State Govt’s online training program on COVID19

Mangaluru: The Yenepoya Deemed to be University National Service Scheme Programme Coordinators, Programme Officers underwent an online ZOOM training program on 31st March 2020, conducted by UNICEF in association with NSS Dept of youth empowerment and sports Govt of Karnataka, on the subject of Risk communication for COVID -19 among communities.

Around 10 NSS program officers of Yenepoya deemed to be University attended the training. On 11 March 2020 the Novel Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) outbreak was declared as a pandemic and the WHO reiterated the call for countries to take immediate actions and scale up their responses to treat, detect and reduce transmission to save people’s lives.

In pursuance of this call, the National service Scheme, Govt of Karnataka has taken steps to spread awareness among 4000 program officers of Karnataka through the online zoom app. Through this initiative, it expects all the program officers of the Karnataka state to transmit this message to the NSS Volunteers of the Karnataka state.

Yenepoya University NSS Programme officers have started spreading awareness through making PPT Presentations on awareness to all the NSS volunteers. Dr. Gannanath Yekkar State Officer, NSS Cell, Youth empowerment and sports, Govt of Karnataka has said the in this disaster NSS can take a major role and ready spread awareness among communities.

The NSS plays an exceptional role in an emergency situation like the current crisis of COVID19, NSS has a huge presence of enthusiastic coordinators, officers and volunteers all over Karnataka who can make a difference in the crisis prevent the spread in the communities.

The UNICEF team has also highlighted in their presentation about the Key facts about COVID 19, mode of transmission, why is it dangerous, Key behavior for prevention from COVID 19, Behaviour for suspected or confirmed cases, hand hygiene, prevention respiratory hygiene, Prevention social distancing, Prevention high-risk group.

They also stressed upon the role of the NSS as to share correct and factual information on COVID19, promote the key behaviors to be practiced by community members to spread the virus, support local authorities in preparedness for containment and support in surveillance and report suspected cases, promote service available for women and children, Minimize panic and responsible behavior.

Action plan given to all the program officers are as follows:

  • Trained NSS Programme officers must conduct online training for NSS Volunteers through video handouts etc and to share reliable sources of information on COVID19.

The session ended with the panel discussion with all the members of the UNICEF Kulandai raj,Manoj and others and program officers had a fruitful discussion on the topic COVID 19 Preparedness in KARNATAKA.

Program officers Dr. Pracheth, Dr. Akshay KM, Dr. Imran Pasha, Dr. Savitha, Dr. Jyanesh, Dr.Mohammed Asif, Renita Priya participated in the Program. The program was coordinated by Dr.Ashwini S Shetty
