Mangaluru: In an attempt to sensitize students about the significant role of humanity in conserving nature, the students and teachers of CFAL and ELC as part of the weeklong ‘Vana Mahotsava’ celebrations planted more than 300 saplings across various places in and around Mangalore and Udupi. Fruit bearing, dar shrubs, trees of the forest species and other varieties of saplings were planted.

Speaking about the plantation program, Vijay Moras, Program Coordinator, CFAL/ ELC said, “The aim of the drive was to create strong student awareness while reinforcing a sense of responsibility in all of us towards our environment. It was great to see students take up the project with so much enthusiasm”. Environmentalist Jeeth Milan Roche and Dr Vineeth Kumar led the student activities. Apart from the plantation drive, various other activities were also conducted as part of the program including a drive to help clean the debris around Phalguni River.

Also, various discussion sessions for students as part of Nature Club were organised. The Nature Club aims at inculcating an understanding of nature amongst students and encourages them to participate in conservation initiatives. Samuel John, a writer, photographer and researcher and Chetana Purushotham, a wildlife biologist, ocean explorer, spoke to students regarding the opportunities and challenges concerning various environmental issues. They also took students for a Nature Walk to observe and document their findings in their local environments.

With a combination of academic and hands-on work, the Nature School program at ELC and CFAL was an enlightening and meaningful endeavour for all the participants.
