Sasthan: The Sasthan unit of ICYM recently organised ‘Yuva Samagam’, a deanery-level panel discussion, at the ST. Antony Church Mythri hall, Sasthan.
The programme, in which around 180 youth from nine parishes of the Kallianpur deanery participated, comprised of an inaugural ceremony, panel session on the topic ‘Christian leadership’, holy mass, cultural competition and valedictory function.
Rev. Fr John Walter Mendonca, Parish priest of St Antony Church, Sasthan presided over the inauguration. Dr Vincent Alva, principal of Milagres Degree College, Kallianpur was the Chief Guest.
Inaugurating the programme, Fr. John Walter Mendonca spoke about how important is is for the youth to utilise every chance to move forward and develop.
Aral D’Souza welcomed the gathering, Melrica proposed a vote of thanks and introduced the moderator of the panel session Dr Vincent Alva, principal of Milagres Degree College, Kallianpur and moderator to the gathering.
After the inaugural ceremony, a panel session on the topic ‘Christian leadership’ was conducted. Under this, five other topics were discussed, such as- Fourth pillar of Democracy – Voice of minorities or advocate of majorities, Church and media – The big picture, Crisis of Christian spokespersons – A challenge and Social media – A stage to propagate harmony or hatred. Seven youth panelists from seven units spoke and presented their point of view on these four topics.
The moderator Dr Vincent Alva concluded the session saying, “The younger generation, namely today’s Christian youth must become serious in life and stand against violations as they will be the pillars of our nation who are capable of making India a secular and safe country”.
Fr Edwin D’Souza, director ICYM Udupi diocese, presided over the programme and congratulated the panelists and youth for their active participation.
Later in the day, the Holy Eucharist was celebrated by Very. Rev. Dr. Fr. Lawrence D’Souza, Vicar Forane of the Kallianpur Deanary.
During the cultural section of the programme, ICYM groups from nine parishes presented skits and dances with the current issues as the theme.
The valedictory function was presided over by Rev. Dr. Fr. Leslie Clifford D’Souza, youth director of the Kallianpur Deanery. Other dignitaries on the dais were Rev. Fr. John Walter Mendonca, Parish priest of Sasthan Church, Rev. Fr. Philip Neri Aranha, Parish priest of Barkur Church, Rev. Fr. Jerald Sandeep D’Mello assistant Parish priest, Kolalgiri, Aral D’Souza and Melrica ICYM deanery president and secretary respectively.
In his message, Fr. Leslie congratulated the youth for gathering together in large numbers, appreciated them for their creativity and congratulated them for conducting the panel session.
Fr. Leslie then announced the results of the competition. The unit from Kolalgiri were the victors of the competition, Mount Rosary unit was the first runner-up and Sasthan Unit was the second runner-up.
