New Delhi: Employees who have forgotten their Universal Account Number (UAN) need not worry, as the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) allows members to retrieve it online using Aadhaar, PAN or their PF Member ID. The process can be completed through the EPFO Member Portal or the UMANG app, provided the member’s mobile number is linked to their EPF account.

The UAN is a unique 12-digit number assigned by EPFO that links all of an employee’s provident fund accounts across different employers. It is essential for checking PF balances, transferring accounts, filing claims and updating KYC details.

Retrieve your UAN through the EPFO Member Portal

Members can recover their UAN by following these steps:

  1. Visit the official EPFO Member Portal.
  2. Click on “Know your UAN” under the UAN services section.
  3. Enter any one of the following:
    • Aadhaar number
    • PAN
    • PF Member ID
  4. Provide your name, date of birth and registered mobile number.
  5. Verify the details using the OTP sent to your registered mobile number.
  6. Once verified, your UAN will be displayed on the screen and can also be sent via SMS.

Retrieve UAN using the UMANG app

EPFO members can also use the UMANG mobile application to access UAN-related services.

After logging into the app and navigating to EPFO services, users can verify their identity using the required details and retrieve their UAN. EPFO has been shifting several member services, including UAN activation, to the UMANG platform to streamline access.

Details you need

To recover your UAN, ensure you have:

  • Aadhaar number, PAN or PF Member ID
  • Registered mobile number linked with EPFO
  • Name and date of birth matching EPFO records

If your mobile number has changed or is not linked to your EPF account, you may need to update your details through your employer or EPFO before retrieving your UAN.

Why your UAN is important

The Universal Account Number serves as the primary identity for EPF members and enables several online services, including:

  • Checking PF balance and passbook
  • Filing PF withdrawal claims
  • Transferring PF when changing jobs
  • Updating KYC details
  • Tracking claim status
  • Downloading UAN and PF-related documents

Keeping your UAN active and your Aadhaar, PAN and bank details updated helps ensure smooth access to EPFO services.

Keep your EPFO details updated

EPFO has recently upgraded several of its digital services, including restoring the passbook portal and moving certain UAN-related services to the UMANG app. Members are advised to keep their mobile number, Aadhaar, PAN and bank details updated to avoid delays while accessing benefits or filing claims.

For members who have forgotten their UAN, the online recovery process offers a quick and secure way to regain access to their EPF account without visiting an EPFO office.
