The Household Consumption Expenditure Survey (HCES) 2023-24 reveals that southern states are surpassing the national average in monthly per capita consumption expenditure (MPCE). Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka showcase significant rural and urban spending levels above the national averages of ₹4,122 and ₹6,996, respectively.
Kerala: ₹6,611 (rural), ₹7,834 (urban)
Tamil Nadu: ₹5,872 (rural), ₹8,325 (urban)
Telangana: ₹5,675 (rural), ₹9,131 (urban)
Andhra Pradesh: ₹6,107 (rural), ₹9,877 (urban)
Karnataka: ₹5,068 (rural), ₹8,169 (urban)
Despite industrialization, states like Gujarat and Maharashtra align with national averages, while populous northern states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar fall below. Interestingly, Sikkim reported the highest MPCE—₹9,377 (rural) and ₹13,927 (urban)—while Chhattisgarh recorded the lowest.
The survey, conducted from August 2023 to July 2024, underscores significant disparities nationwide, providing valuable data on poverty, inequality, and economic health.
