Flood fury grips Kerala as torrential rain causes deaths, alerts and chaos
Relentless downpours battered Kerala on Tuesday, unleashing widespread flooding, damage to public infrastructure, and multiple weather alerts.
In Kasaragod, a tragic incident occurred when a woman named Bhavani from Kudlu was swept away by surging floodwaters and later found dead. Separately, a farmer in Edathua lost his life due to electrocution in a waterlogged area near his house. Authorities issued a coastal warning as the Mogral river overflowed, submerging low-lying areas like Madhur. Consequently, all educational institutions, including professional colleges, were shut for the day.
In Wayanad, the Banasura Sagar dam water level touched 2,390 feet, prompting officials to issue a blue alert. The district administration has urged the public to remain cautious. In Kasaragod, an orange alert has been sounded for Uppala, Neeleswaram (Chayyom Station), and Mogral (Madhur Station), while a yellow alert was declared for the Kariangode river.
Over in Kannur, the Vannayikkadavu bridge was inundated, cutting off the Payyavoor–Nellikutti route. In Ernakulam’s Eloor, a falling banyan tree branch injured two individuals, including a student.
Relief camps have been set up in Kottayam, and rain holidays announced in schools within Kuttanad taluk, although exams will proceed as scheduled.
The IMD has put Kannur and Kasaragod on orange alert, while districts including Wayanad, Thrissur, and Idukki are under yellow alert due to expected heavy rain and wind gusts up to 50 kmph.
Residents near rivers have been told to be ready for emergency relocation, with authorities emphasizing strict compliance with safety instructions.
