City Crime Branch (CCB) officers have successfully captured Jose Kutty Papacchan, 55, who had been on the run for three decades after his involvement in a 1995 murder case.
The incident occurred on March 12, 1995, when security guards—Suresh, Narayana, and Devanna—were patrolling a factory in Bala village within Suratkal’s jurisdiction. At approximately 10:30 p.m., three unknown men approached. When questioned, the men attacked the guards, injuring Narayana fatally.
During the confrontation, Jose Kutty and co-accused Acchan Kunhi allegedly assaulted several laborers resting near the canteen. Thomas, a relative of one of the workers, attempted to intervene but was severely injured when struck with an iron rod. Following the assault, a murder case was filed against both Jose Kutty and Kunhi, who promptly fled, frequently moving across Kerala, Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Tamil Nadu. Authorities issued a long-pending charge (LPC) warrant, though Kunhi reportedly passed away eight years ago.
After four months of renewed investigation, Mangaluru’s CCB team finally arrested Jose Kutty in Tripunithura, Ernakulam district, Kerala, on October 23. Assistant Commissioner of Police Manoj Kumar Naik, Inspector Shyam Sundar H M, ASI Mohan K V, and other officers played key roles in the capture. City Police Commissioner Anupam Agarwal lauded the CCB’s persistent efforts in tracking down the fugitive.
