In a tragic case of honour killing, four men were sentenced to death by the Gadag District and Sessions Court on January 30, after being found guilty of brutally murdering a couple in Gadag district. The crime took place in Lakkalakati village, near Gajendragarh, in November 2019, when the couple returned to their native village to celebrate Diwali.
The victims were attacked by family members of one of the individuals, who opposed their marriage. The attackers brutally killed them in public, using various weapons, which shocked the state and raised concerns about caste-based violence.
The incident was reported to the Gajendragarh police station, leading to a formal investigation and a charge sheet being filed against the accused under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code, including sections related to murder, trespassing, and criminal intimidation.
The couple had married in 2017 despite facing strong opposition from their families due to their different castes. After their marriage, they had been living in Shivamogga with their young children. The case highlights the persistent challenges of caste-based discrimination and violence in society.
