New Delhi: Minecraft is set to receive its first new dimension in more than 14 years, with Mojang Studios confirming that The Sift will arrive in Minecraft Java and Bedrock Edition in 2027.

The announcement was made during Minecraft Live on September 26, 2026, giving players their first official confirmation that The Sift will move beyond its role in the upcoming Minecraft Dungeons II and become part of the main Minecraft experience. It will join the Overworld, Nether and End as the game’s fourth dimension.

The Sift was originally revealed as a major setting in Minecraft Dungeons II. That game is scheduled to launch on September 29, 2026, giving players an early opportunity to explore the strange new realm before it makes its way into the main Minecraft game.

The Sift becomes Minecraft’s fourth dimension

Minecraft has retained its three major dimensions for more than a decade. The Overworld serves as the primary world, while the Nether and End provide separate environments with their own creatures, resources and progression elements.

The arrival of The Sift will change that structure when the dimension is added to Java and Bedrock in 2027.

Mojang has described The Sift as a strange and colourful reality featuring new environments, creatures and gameplay rules. The studio has also confirmed that the dimension will contain areas such as Meadows and Carapace in Minecraft Dungeons II.

However, several important details about the version coming to the main Minecraft game remain undisclosed.

Mojang has not yet revealed when in 2027 The Sift will be released, how players will access it in vanilla Minecraft or exactly how its mechanics will differ from those seen in Minecraft Dungeons II.

The Sift first appears in Minecraft Dungeons II

Players will encounter The Sift much sooner in Minecraft Dungeons II.

The upcoming action-RPG begins with strange events affecting the Overworld. New enemies appear and unusual phenomena involving souls begin to unfold before players discover the new dimension.

Players can enter The Sift through mysterious rifts in the Dungeons II experience. Once inside, the environment looks significantly different from the familiar Minecraft Overworld. Mojang has showcased colourful landscapes, unusual creatures and dangerous new encounters.

The dimension is designed around new environmental hazards and gameplay mechanics. Mojang has said shifting conditions inside The Sift can affect characters, while hazardous blocks and unfamiliar environments create additional challenges.

The Sift therefore serves as more than a visual change. It introduces a separate set of rules and encounters that distinguish it from the game’s traditional environments.

New biomes and creatures revealed

Mojang has confirmed at least two named areas in The Sift — Meadows and Carapace — although the studio has kept other locations under wraps.

The dimension also contains creatures that do not appear in the traditional Minecraft worlds. Footage shown ahead of the Dungeons II release has offered glimpses of strange, colourful wildlife alongside hostile enemies.

An official Xbox Wire report said the Sift features new mobs that can appear as companions or threats. The studio has also described the dimension as containing both beautiful landscapes and mysterious dangers.

The information currently available from Minecraft Dungeons II provides an indication of the visual and gameplay direction for The Sift, but Mojang has not confirmed that every creature, block or mechanic seen in the spin-off will transfer directly into vanilla Minecraft.

That distinction will be important when the first development previews for the main game eventually reveal more.

How will players enter The Sift in Minecraft?

One of the biggest unanswered questions is how players will reach the new dimension in standard Minecraft.

In Minecraft Dungeons II, rifts provide a route into The Sift. Mojang has not yet confirmed whether the same system will be used in Java and Bedrock Edition.

The studio has specifically said it is not ready to provide many details about how players will access The Sift in the main game. It has also indicated that the version in Minecraft may differ from its implementation in Dungeons II.

This leaves several possibilities open, including whether players will need to discover a new structure, activate a portal or complete another progression requirement.

For now, none of those methods has been officially confirmed.

Minecraft Dungeons II offers an early look

Minecraft Dungeons II is scheduled to launch on September 29, 2026, across Xbox Series X|S, PC, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. It will also be available through Game Pass on supported Xbox platforms and PC.

The game is expected to give Minecraft players their first substantial opportunity to experience The Sift before its arrival in the main title.

The Dungeons II version features a different gameplay structure from traditional Minecraft. Rather than focusing primarily on mining, crafting and open-ended building, the spin-off is an action-RPG centred around exploration, combat and equipment.

That means players should not assume that the Sift will function identically in the two games.

First new dimension since The End

The Sift’s arrival marks a major change to Minecraft’s long-standing dimensional structure.

The End was introduced with Minecraft’s full release in 2011, making it the most recently added dimension in the main game until The Sift arrives. The new realm will therefore be the first addition to the game’s dimensional lineup in more than 14 years.

The announcement also comes as Mojang continues to expand Minecraft through its Game Drop model, which has generally focused on smaller batches of new content rather than the large annual updates associated with earlier years.

The Sift represents a significantly larger addition because it introduces an entirely separate world for players to explore.

More details expected before 2027 launch

Despite the announcement, Mojang has revealed only a portion of what The Sift will offer in vanilla Minecraft.

Details still to be confirmed include its exact release date, method of entry, complete biome lineup, available resources, structures, enemies, progression mechanics and whether it will contain a major boss.

The studio has indicated that more information will be shared through future Minecraft Live events.

For now, Minecraft Dungeons II remains the clearest source of information about the new dimension. Players will be able to explore its version of The Sift from September 29, while Java and Bedrock players will have to wait until 2027 for its arrival in the main game.

The announcement effectively ends Minecraft’s long period with only three major dimensions and opens the door to a new chapter for the game’s exploration and survival systems.
