GNLU students force action after campus suicide exposes negligence
Hundreds of students at Gujarat National Law University (GNLU) staged a powerful protest on Thursday, demanding accountability after the tragic suicide of Vansh Gaint, a 21-year-old third-year law student, in his hostel room earlier this week. The incident sent ripples of grief and anger across the campus, spotlighting deep flaws in the university’s emergency response and student welfare systems.
The face-off between students and administration lasted over an hour, ultimately compelling authorities to suspend both the hostel warden and the nurse on duty the night Vansh died. In an email to students, registrar Nitin Malik admitted institutional lapses, stating, “We recognize certain failures brought to light by this heartbreaking event.”
Key corrective measures were immediately announced:
- Round-the-clock ambulance stationed outside both hostels
- Emergency contact numbers prominently shared
- Availability of essential medical equipment
- Appointment of a resident doctor and mental health counsellors
- Provision of door-opening tools for emergencies
- Formation of a Student Activities Committee (SAC) to improve communication and welfare
Earlier, students had issued a scathing press statement titled “Tragedy at GNLU: Institutional Apathy, Administrative Negligence, and Suppression of Student Rights”. The statement detailed how the warden allegedly minimized the gravity of the situation, leading to a 25-minute delay. It accused staff of abandoning rescue efforts, leaving peers to break down the door and attempt aid—actions that tragically came too late.
