Gruha Arogya Yojana to Launch in Mysuru: Doorstep Health Checks for NCDs Soon
Mysuru: The Gruha Arogya Yojana, a flagship initiative by the Karnataka Health Department, is set to be launched in Mysuru by the end of this month. The scheme is designed to deliver non-communicable disease (NCD) screening and management services directly to people’s homes.
Dr. D G Nagaraj, District Surveillance and NCD Control Officer, said the scheme targets early detection and timely treatment of NCDs to reduce complications and premature deaths. The state government has allocated ₹92.75 crore for this project.
Alongside existing diabetes and hypertension checks, the programme will also screen for oral, breast, cervical cancers, diabetic retinopathy, foot ulcers, COPD, kidney disease, sleep apnea, mental health and neurological disorders.
Of the 3 crore+ people screened across Karnataka, 26% were diagnosed with hypertension and 15% with diabetes. Mysuru’s figures stand at 26% and 13% respectively. Alarming is the low follow-up rate: only around 14% of diagnosed rural patients return for continued care.
The campaign will be implemented by Community Health Officers, PHCOs, Health Inspectors, and ASHA workers, who will visit homes under Ayushman Arogya Mandir limits on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Patients diagnosed with hypertension or diabetes will receive two months of medicines at home, with continued support for seniors, the specially abled, and palliative care patients.
Monthly camps at Ayushman Mandirs will aid follow-up and referrals. Patients will also get ABHA health IDs and PMJAY-Arogya Karnataka cards for digital recordkeeping and subsidized treatment.
NCDs, linked to lifestyle and habits, are now rising in rural areas too. The programme aims to cut NCD-related mortality by a third by 2030.
