A man suspected to have contracted Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) has died in Solapur district, Maharashtra, marking what may be the state’s first death attributed to the rare immunological nerve disorder. The man, originally from Solapur, is believed to have contracted GBS while in Pune, where the number of cases has now surpassed 100.

As of Sunday, Pune reported 101 GBS cases, with 68 males and 33 females affected. Sixteen of these patients are currently on ventilators, and the suspected death in Solapur has added to the growing concerns. Health authorities have been actively monitoring the situation, particularly in the Sinhgad Road areas of Pune. A total of 25,578 houses have been surveyed so far as part of the surveillance efforts by the Rapid Response Team (RRT) and the Pune Municipal Corporation.

GBS, characterized by sudden muscle weakness and numbness, often follows bacterial or viral infections that weaken the immune system. While the condition is rare and can affect both children and young adults, experts reassured that it does not pose a threat of widespread epidemic. With appropriate treatment, most patients recover fully. The state health department is investigating the sudden surge in GBS cases, which initially began with 24 suspected cases.
