In a chilling case from Karnataka’s Hassan district, a woman named Chaitra has been arrested for allegedly attempting to kill her husband, two children, and mother-in-law by poisoning their food and coffee. The motive, police say, was to eliminate obstacles to her ongoing extramarital affair.

Chaitra, married to Gajendra for 11 years, had previously been involved with a man named Puneet. Though that relationship was reportedly resolved through community intervention, she later resumed a secret affair with another man, Shivu.

Fearing her family would oppose the relationship, Chaitra allegedly decided to poison them using toxic pills and substances mixed into their meals. Soon after consumption, the victims began suffering severe stomach pain and were rushed to hospital. Doctors initially suspected food poisoning.

Gajendra, growing suspicious, filed a complaint at Belur Police Station. Investigations confirmed deliberate poisoning. Chaitra was arrested and is now being interrogated, while her alleged partner Shivu has gone absconding.

Hassan Superintendent of Police Mohammed Sujeetha confirmed that an FIR has been filed against Chaitra and Shivu for attempted murder. “Evidence shows she mixed multiple substances into the food over time,” said the SP, adding that Gajendra, his children, and father are now in protective custody.

Police continue their efforts to locate and apprehend Shivu.
