Hassan: Hassan district observed a day of mourning on Monday as the last rites of Chennamma, wife of former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda, are set to be held in Holenarsipur taluk.
A voluntary bandh has been called in Holenarsipur till 2 pm to facilitate the funeral arrangements. As a precautionary measure, the Hassan district administration has also declared a holiday for all anganwadis, schools and colleges across the district.
Public pays final respects
Chennamma’s mortal remains have been kept at the residence of former minister and Holenarsipur MLA H D Revanna in Holenarsipur, where members of the public, political leaders and well-wishers have been paying their last respects.
The funeral procession will begin from Revanna’s residence and proceed to the crematorium at the foothills of Sri Ranganatha Betta in Mavinakere, near Haradanahalli, where the last rites will be performed after 2 pm.
Leaders expected to attend
A large number of ministers, elected representatives and political leaders from across party lines are expected to attend the funeral to pay homage to Chennamma.
Authorities have made elaborate security and traffic arrangements in and around Holenarsipur to ensure the smooth conduct of the funeral ceremony and manage the expected influx of mourners.
The district administration has appealed to the public to cooperate with officials and avoid unnecessary travel in the affected areas until the funeral proceedings are complete
