Tension gripped Gorur Road in Hassan late Friday night when an argument over toll booth right of way escalated into a violent brawl, ending with gunshots fired into the air. Police arrested eight young men involved in the incident near Byadarahalli toll.

According to Gorur police, the confrontation began when two groups travelling in separate cars — one from Kerala’s Katayar Temple to Davanagere, and the other heading to Kodagu — clashed over who should proceed first at the toll. The verbal spat quickly turned physical.

The situation took a dangerous turn when Yogeesh, one of the accused, opened fire into the air during the altercation. Both groups then stopped near a roadside barricade and continued the fight.

Upon receiving reports, Gorur police rushed to the spot, detained all involved, and brought them to the station for thorough questioning. The accused — Ganesh, Ningaraju, Sanjay, Girish, Kiran, Bopanna, Chetan, and Yogeesh — were booked under the Arms Act and for misuse of firearms.

All eight were produced before a magistrate and have been remanded to judicial custody. Meanwhile, both parties have filed counter-complaints at the Gorur police station.

Police are investigating the origin of the firearm and how it came into Yogeesh’s possession.
