Hassan, Karnataka: In a heartbreaking incident, a family of three from Channarayapatna taluk in Hassan district has died by suicide, allegedly driven by massive losses incurred from online rummy. The bodies of Srinivas (43), his wife Shwetha (36), and their 11-year-old daughter were found in the Hemavathi channel on Wednesday.
Srinivas, who owned and rented out two cars in Bengaluru, and Shwetha, a teacher at a local private school, had reportedly been struggling with financial difficulties due to Srinivas’s gambling addiction. The family’s daughter was a Class 7 student.
According to police, Srinivas’s addiction to online rummy led him to accumulate significant debt, resulting in mounting pressure from creditors. Unable to repay the loans, it is suspected that the family took this tragic step as a result of financial distress.
The Nuggehalli police, who had been investigating a missing person report filed on August 10, traced Srinivas’s last known phone activity to the area near the channel. The bodies were subsequently recovered from the location.
