The Fast Track Special Court-1 in Haveri sentenced Prasad Chikkalli, 25, to 10 years imprisonment for a 2020 acid attack on a woman, with a fine of ₹1.7 lakh imposed. The court also directed the government to compensate the survivor ₹3 lakh under the acid attack survivor scheme.

The attack occurred on January 28, 2020, on Ranebennur Road when Chikkalli, a former college peer, threw acid on the woman after she rejected his repeated marriage proposals. Both were students at Kerimattihalli PG Centre. Despite his false claims of employment, the survivor declined his advances, leading to the violent assault.

The survivor, a garment factory supervisor, sustained severe facial injuries. Her family welcomed the verdict, stating, “Justice is served. The culprit does not deserve a normal life after causing such pain.”

Police registered charges under Sections 326A, 307, and 506 based on the survivor’s and witnesses’ accounts. Women Police CPI T Manjanna oversaw the case, and prosecutor Vijay Kumar S. Patil ensured justice prevailed.

The swift conclusion of the trial, within four years, highlights the judiciary’s commitment to addressing gender-based violence.
