Janata Dal (Secular) leader HD Kumaraswamy has emerged victorious in Karnataka’s Mandya Lok Sabha constituency, securing 8,51,881 votes and winning by a margin of 2,84,620 votes. The former Karnataka Chief Minister contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections as a National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate.

HD Kumaraswamy’s son, Nikhil Kumaraswamy, ran in the 2019 Lok Sabha election from Mandya but lost to independent candidate Sumalatha Ambareesh. In the 2023 Karnataka Assembly election, Nikhil contested from the Ramanagara constituency, previously won by his mother, Anitha Kumaraswamy, in 2018. He was defeated by Congress’ HA Iqbal Hussain by nearly 8,000 votes.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, JD(S) allied with the Indian National Congress, securing only one out of the seven seats they contested. The BJP won 25 out of 28 seats in Karnataka. The Election Commission of India announced that the voting day for the Mandya Lok Sabha Constituency Election 2024 was April 26 (Phase 2), with results declared on June 4.

HD Kumaraswamy, born on December 16, 1959, in Haradanahalli village, Hassan district, is the son of former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda and brother of former minister and MLA HD Revanna. Kumaraswamy, who has three criminal cases and debts totaling 82.2 crore, completed his BSc from National College, Bengaluru, before venturing into film distribution. He married Anitha Kumaraswamy in 1986 and founded Channambika Films. Following his father’s footsteps, he entered politics, winning the 1996 Lok Sabha election from the Bangalore Rural constituency. Despite unsuccessful attempts in 1998 and 1999, he became an MLA from the Ramnagar constituency in 2004.
