On the night of August 18, 19 students from Adarsh Nursing College‘s student hostel in Bengaluru were hospitalized after experiencing severe breathing problems caused by rat repellent used by the hostel management. The repellent, intended to eliminate a rat infestation, contained toxic substances that adversely affected the students, leading to their emergency admission to nearby hospitals.
West Bengaluru Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) S. Girish reported that the affected students, along with hostel staff and members of the public, were rushed to medical facilities. While most students have since received treatment and are recovering, three students—identified as Jayan Varghese, Dileesh, and Jo Mon—remain in critical condition and have been moved to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
The DCP confirmed that a legal case will be initiated against the hostel management under Section 286 BNS, which pertains to causing harm through the use of hazardous substances. Authorities are investigating the incident to ensure accountability and to prevent future occurrences.
This incident highlights the potential dangers associated with improper use of chemicals and underscores the need for stringent safety measures in managing hostel facilities.
