Many families swear by traditional home remedies, particularly during the winter season. One such remedy that has gained popularity is applying desi ghee to the nostrils to combat seasonal illnesses like colds and coughs. Stuti Agarwal, a mom blogger, shared her experience with this age-old practice, which she says was recommended by both an ENT specialist and her pediatrician. “When I told my mom, she said it was an age-old remedy, and I became curious,” Agarwal wrote.

How to use desi ghee for nasal health?

To apply the remedy, slightly warm the desi ghee (ensuring it’s not too hot) and use a clean fingertip or cotton bud to apply a small amount to the entrance of each nostril. Agarwal suggests doing this once or twice daily for the best results.

Does it work?

Dr. Narendra Singhla, a lead consultant at CK Birla Hospital, explained that this practice is rooted in Ayurveda, known as “Nasya.” It involves applying herbal oils or ghee into the nasal passages to improve overall health. Desi ghee has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties that may help alleviate symptoms like nasal congestion, itchiness, and dryness, which are common during seasonal changes. It also supports respiratory health and promotes clear breathing.

Important tips:

Dr. Singhla advises using high-quality, pure ghee and warming it gently before application. A nasal dropper can be used to apply 2-3 drops in each nostril, followed by a gentle sniff to ensure it coats the passages effectively. However, he recommends consulting a healthcare professional before trying this remedy, especially if you have allergies or underlying health conditions.
