Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao has urged Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy to accelerate electric vehicle (EV) adoption in Bengaluru to prevent severe pollution levels similar to Delhi-NCR.
Call for Immediate Action
In a letter issued Monday, Rao highlighted the environmental risks posed by fuel-based vehicles, stressing the urgency of transitioning to EVs. He proposed that permits for auto-rickshaws, cabs, taxis, goods carriers, and waste collection vehicles be limited to EVs. Additionally, he recommended that the city’s transport corporation add only EV buses to its fleet.
Pollution Concerns & Preventive Measures
Bengaluru’s high population density, traffic volume, and geographical conditions contribute to worsening air quality. Rao warned that proactive steps are essential to avoid a pollution crisis.
Infrastructure & Policy Push
Rao emphasized strengthening EV infrastructure, increasing public transport usage, and phasing out conventional fuel-based vehicles. The shift towards EVs in both public and private sectors would be crucial in making Bengaluru a cleaner, greener city.
