Karnataka Food Safety Department Issues Warning On Carcinogenic Ingredients In Bakery Cakes

The Karnataka Food Safety and Quality Department has issued a critical warning to bakeries about the potential presence of carcinogenic ingredients in cakes sold across the state. Following tests conducted on various cakes from several Bengaluru bakeries, 12 different varieties were found to contain cancer-causing agents, raising alarms among consumers.

This warning is part of a broader concern regarding artificial colors in popular foods, including gobi manchurian and pani puri, which have also been identified as containing harmful substances. The department emphasized the need for bakeries to adhere to food safety standards, as these artificial colors not only heighten cancer risk but may also lead to various health issues.

Popular cake varieties, such as red velvet and black forest, known for their vibrant artificial colors, have been specifically flagged as health hazards. The artificial colors detected include Allura Red, Sunset Yellow FCF, Ponso 4R, Tartrazine, and Carmoisine.

In response to the health risks associated with these ingredients, the Karnataka government had previously banned Rhodamine-B, a harmful food coloring agent used in dishes like gobi manchurian and cotton candy. Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao stated that strict action would be taken against vendors found using such chemicals.

The Food Safety and Standards Regulations prohibit the use of artificial or synthetic colors beyond permissible limits in food production. The Karnataka Food Safety Department urges consumers to exercise caution and prioritize their health when selecting bakery products.
