Mosquito invasion troubles Bengaluru after cyclone Fengal
The aftermath of Cyclone Fengal, which struck parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry in early December, has left Bengaluru struggling with a surge in mosquitoes. Residents from localities like Chandra Layout, Annasandra Palya near HAL, Vignana Nagar, Bellandur, Wilson Garden, and Vinoba Nagar are raising concerns, urging the civic body to take swift action to address the problem.
Many blame the mosquito infestation on garbage accumulation in certain neglected areas, worsened by careless waste disposal. These piles of trash have become hotspots for mosquito breeding. The persistent rain earlier this month further aggravated the situation, leaving public spaces and parks infested with mosquitoes.
“Joggers and walkers find it unbearable due to mosquitoes swarming parks and open spaces. Immediate action by the BBMP through intensified fogging and spraying is crucial,” said a resident from Nanjarasappa Layout in Chandra Layout.
The BBMP Health Commissioner, Suralkar Vikas Kishore, assured that teams are already on the ground to mitigate the issue. A senior health department official added that fogging and spraying are being carried out during the evenings and will be scaled up in the coming days. The official also noted that the cold winter weather will naturally curb mosquito activity.
Residents are hopeful that prompt and robust measures will restore relief in the coming weeks. The call for collective responsibility in waste management remains key to long-term solutions.
