Mpox, a viral infection previously known as monkeypox, can spread through close contact with infected individuals or animals. Dr Chhavi Gupta, Senior Consultant of Infectious Disease at Yashoda Super Speciality Hospital, highlights vaccination as the most effective protection. “One must get both doses of the Jynneos vaccine, administered four weeks apart. If you’ve already received the first dose, get the second as soon as possible,” she advises.

Dr Gupta also stresses preventive steps, “Avoid close contact with individuals displaying skin lesions or rashes resembling Mpox, as well as animals that might be infected. Events or parties where minimal clothing and personal contact are common should be avoided.”

Dr Seema Dhir, Senior Consultant in Internal Medicine at Artemis Hospitals, adds that hygiene is essential. “Frequent handwashing with soap and water, especially after touching potentially contaminated surfaces or individuals, is crucial. Keep cuts or abrasions clean and avoid sharing personal items to minimise exposure.”

Defending Against Dengue: Eliminating Mosquito Breeding Grounds
Dengue fever, spread by Aedes mosquitoes, poses a significant threat in tropical and subtropical regions. The experts highlight the importance of controlling mosquito breeding areas around homes. “Stagnant water serves as breeding grounds for mosquitoes,” Dr Gupta points out. “Eliminate water accumulation and use mosquito repellents. Wearing long-sleeved clothing can also help.”

Dr Dhir echoes the advice, adding, “Regularly empty and cover water containers, and install mosquito nets and window screens. Children, particularly, should be safeguarded with nets or protective measures as they are at higher risk.”

Holistic Hygiene and Preparedness
Both experts underscore the need for a comprehensive approach to health and hygiene. Dr Dhir stresses the importance of overall cleanliness and staying updated on vaccinations. “It is essential to be aware of local health advisories and recommendations from healthcare organisations, as emerging threats may require additional preventive measures.”

Dr Gupta adds, “Hand hygiene remains critical. Use soap or alcohol-based sanitizers frequently, especially before meals or after touching your face.”

 A Proactive Mindset
The experts urge adopting a proactive approach toward family health. “Preparedness and prevention are key,” says Dr Dhir. “Stay informed, seek timely medical care if symptoms arise, and encourage a healthy lifestyle.”

By following these expert recommendations, families can mitigate the risks posed by Dengue, Mpox, and other emerging health threats. Prevention, awareness, and early action remain the cornerstone of safeguarding family health.
