Chennai: Skipping breakfast may seem like a convenient way to save time during busy mornings, but health experts warn that making it a regular habit could negatively affect gallbladder function and increase the risk of gallstone formation. Medical gastroenterologist Dr Arul Prakash said prolonged fasting and irregular meal timings may cause bile to stagnate, creating conditions that favour the development of gallstones.

How skipping breakfast affects the gallbladder

According to Dr Arul Prakash, Medical Gastroenterologist at SRM Prime Hospital, Ramapuram, the gallbladder stores bile, a digestive fluid that is released into the intestines when food is consumed.

Meals, particularly those containing healthy amounts of fat, stimulate the gallbladder to contract and empty the stored bile.

The doctor explained that consuming a meal rich in fat, such as one containing butter or non-vegetarian food, sends signals to the gallbladder to empty itself effectively.

Prolonged fasting may lead to bile stagnation

Dr Prakash said that when people skip breakfast, fast for prolonged periods or frequently miss meals, the gallbladder may not receive the necessary stimulation to contract.

As a result, bile can remain in the gallbladder for longer periods, becoming thicker over time.

According to the expert, this stagnant bile may eventually form sludge, which can contribute to the development of gallstones.

Although skipping breakfast alone is not considered a direct cause of gallstones, prolonged fasting is believed to be one of several factors that can increase the risk.

Gallstones develop due to multiple factors

The gastroenterologist emphasised that gallstones usually develop because of a combination of factors rather than a single habit.

He noted that women between the ages of 20 and 45 years may have a relatively higher risk due to hormonal changes that can make the gallbladder less active.

Reduced movement of the gallbladder may result in inadequate emptying of bile, increasing the likelihood of stone formation.

Symptoms may not appear immediately

Dr Prakash explained that not everyone with gallstones experiences symptoms.

Some individuals may remain asymptomatic for years, while others may develop abdominal pain or complications such as inflammation of the gallbladder or blockage of the bile duct.

Early medical evaluation is recommended if a person experiences persistent upper abdominal pain, especially after meals, nausea or other symptoms suggestive of gallbladder disease.

Importance of a balanced diet

The expert stressed that there is no direct medical evidence linking breakfast skipping alone to gallstones. However, prolonged fasting can affect gallbladder function, making regular meal timings important for digestive health.

He advised maintaining a balanced diet that includes carbohydrates, proteins and healthy fats while avoiding long gaps between meals.

For better gut health, Dr Prakash recommended starting the day with a nutritious breakfast, eating a balanced lunch and keeping dinner relatively light.

Healthy eating supports digestive health

Health experts recommend following consistent meal timings and consuming a well-balanced diet to support normal digestion and gallbladder function.

While occasional meal skipping is unlikely to cause gallstones on its own, regularly missing breakfast or fasting for extended periods may contribute to digestive problems in susceptible individuals. Anyone experiencing symptoms of gallbladder disease should seek medical advice for proper diagnosis and treatment.
