Telephonophobia: generation Z’s fear of phone calls

Generation Z’s reliance on texting and social media has made phone calls a source of significant anxiety. This aversion, known as telephonophobia, is linked to social anxiety and manifests as emotional and physical stress. To address the issue, Nottingham College in the UK has introduced coaching sessions to build students’ confidence in phone communication.

The program, led by careers advisor Liz Baxter, uses role-playing exercises to help students overcome fears and navigate real-world scenarios, such as job interviews or business inquiries. Baxter attributes the rising discomfort with calls to the generation’s preference for digital communication and fears of judgment or embarrassment.

Young people like Donna, 16, and Evie, 17, admit they view phone calls as stressful and formal, highlighting the generational shift away from voice-to-voice interactions. However, practical tips, such as preparing a script and taking control of the situation, can help alleviate phone anxiety over time.
