A woman named Bhavya, a teacher from Panemangaluru, has accused Lady Goschen Government Hospital in Mangaluru of negligence after being informed that her newborn daughter was born without a right eye, two days after delivery. Bhavya delivered her baby at the hospital on August 18 after being transferred from Bantwal government hospital due to a lack of female doctors. Initially, the doctors assured her that the baby was healthy but needed to be placed in the neonatal ICU for breathing issues.

On the evening of August 20, doctors informed Bhavya that her daughter was missing a right eye. Shocked and devastated, Bhavya filed complaints with the Deputy Commissioner and the police, alleging that the hospital staff withheld information and denied her access to medical reports. She also raised concerns about being prevented from breastfeeding her baby despite having a normal delivery.

In response, Dr. Durga Prasad M R, Superintendent of Lady Goschen Government Hospital, denied any negligence, explaining that the baby’s breathing difficulties required placement on a SiPap machine in the neonatal ICU. The recessed right eyeball was noticed on the night of August 19, and an eye specialist later confirmed that the baby was born without a right eyeball. Dr. Prasad stated that the hospital has documentation, including photos and CCTV footage, to support their actions.

The Tulunada Rakshana Vedike, a local organization, has come forward to support Bhavya, demanding a thorough investigation into the incident.
