Hindalga Jail Inmates Protest Over Facilities Following Darshan’s Viral Photo
Belagavi: Inmates at Hindalga Jail in Belagavi staged a protest on Sunday, demanding access to tobacco products, beedis, and cigarettes after a photo of actor Darshan with a cigarette inside Bengaluru Central Prison went viral. The protest saw over 500 undertrial prisoners skipping breakfast and threatening to forgo lunch unless their demands were met.
The unrest began after images emerged showing Darshan, who is an accused in a high-profile murder case, enjoying cigarettes and socializing with other inmates at Bengaluru Central Prison. The actor, along with nine co-accused, is facing charges related to the murder of S Renukaswamy. Darshan and his associates were arrested in June, and recent photos and videos from the prison have caused significant public and media uproar.
Prison Authority Response:
Krishnamurthy, the superintendent of Hindalga Jail, confirmed that the protest was driven by the inmates’ frustration over the restrictions imposed on buying tobacco items from outsiders. “Previously, prisoners could purchase their preferred items from outside, but this facility has been blocked following a new order from the prison ministry,” he explained.
The protest reflects growing discontent among the inmates who are demanding similar privileges that were reportedly afforded to Darshan. In response to the viral photos and the ensuing controversy, the Karnataka government suspended nine prison officials for lapses in security and misconduct. Darshan has since been transferred to Ballari Prison.
The situation underscores ongoing concerns about prison conditions and the equitable treatment of inmates, especially in high-profile cases. The authorities are currently addressing these issues to ensure compliance with prison regulations and maintain order.
