Households in Chamarajanagar to Receive Electricity via Underground Cables for First Time
Over 1,800 tribal households in Chamarajanagar’s forested areas will soon have access to electricity through an underground cabling project, bringing lasting infrastructure and a “better quality of life” to residents. This Rs 42 crore initiative, led by the district administration with Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation Limited (CESC), is set to transform 22 remote tribal settlements with residents’ full consent.
“Prior solar efforts were limited due to the region’s difficult access via forest roads,” said Chamarajanagar Deputy Commissioner Shilpa Nag. “This comprehensive project aims to electrify nearly 1,854 tribal homes, improving daily life and facilitating basic appliances.”
The project, developed in collaboration with the forest department, received critical clearance to prevent disturbance to local wildlife. With the Chief Minister’s backing, construction is set to begin within 15 days and is expected to conclude in four months.
Santhosh Kumar, Deputy Conservator of Forests for the MM Hills Division, confirmed that proposals for 20 of the 22 haadis have been cleared, with final approvals imminent. CESC MD G Sheela noted that underground cabling was essential to safeguard the forest environment and that funding assurances have been secured from the Ministry of Power.
Expanding this model, CESC plans similar projects for tribal settlements in Madikeri, Hassan, and Sakleshpur, also with local consent.
