Hubballi: Police in Karnataka’s Hubballi have launched a comprehensive investigation into a disturbing case involving the alleged repeated sexual assault of a minor girl, claims that her newborn baby was sold, and allegations of negligence against her parents and two private doctors.

An FIR has been registered following a complaint by the Dharwad District Child Protection Unit under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, and other applicable laws.

Minor allegedly assaulted repeatedly

According to the complaint, the girl was allegedly lured and sexually assaulted on multiple occasions in 2025, resulting in pregnancy.

Police said her parents allegedly concealed the pregnancy and failed to inform the authorities despite knowing that she was a minor.

Officials further alleged that after the child was born, the newborn was handed over to another family. Investigators are probing whether the child was illegally sold.

Police also said the minor is now reportedly pregnant again, prompting a wider investigation into the circumstances surrounding the case.

Doctors and parents under investigation

The FIR also names two private doctors accused of treating the minor without following mandatory legal procedures or informing the concerned authorities, as required in cases involving children.

Hubballi Police Commissioner N. Shashi Kumar said investigators are examining all aspects of the case.

“We have issued notices and are conducting a detailed enquiry. There is a need for a comprehensive investigation because several aspects of the case are still unclear,” he said.

Child Protection Unit seeks thorough probe

Prakash Kodliwada, Child Protection Officer of the Dharwad District Child Protection Unit, said cases had been registered against the parents for allegedly failing to report the matter and against the doctors for not informing the authorities.

He added that information received from the minor suggested the newborn had been given away, and police would determine during the investigation whether the child had been sold.

Authorities are also verifying the girl’s current whereabouts after being informed that she is receiving medical treatment while staying with relatives.

Police said further action will depend on the findings of the ongoing investigation.
