A charity photoshoot that became football history

The photographs were taken in December 2007 during a charity calendar shoot organised by FC Barcelona, UNICEF, and Spanish newspaper Diario Sport.

Yamal’s family had won a charity raffle, giving them the opportunity to participate in the photoshoot at Camp Nou. By chance, six-month-old Lamine was paired with a 20-year-old Messi, who was then emerging as Barcelona’s next superstar.

Photographer Joan Monfort later recalled that Messi was initially shy about handling the baby, but the session went ahead, producing images that would become iconic nearly two decades later.

Forgotten for years before going viral

The photographs remained largely forgotten until 2024, when Yamal’s father shared one of the images on social media with the caption, “The beginning of two legends.”

The post quickly went viral as Yamal emerged as one of world football’s brightest young stars after helping Spain win Euro 2024.
