10-year-old drowns while fishing with brother
In a heartbreaking incident in Cherumkuzhi, Thrissur district, a 10-year-old boy named Sarun drowned in a pond on Tuesday afternoon while out fishing with his younger brother.
Sarun, the elder son of Suresh, a rubber tapping worker from Murukkumkundu Colony, had gone to the pond near their home along with Varun, his 8-year-old sibling. According to locals, the boys were fishing when Sarun lost his footing and slipped into the deeper part of the pond.
While Varun managed to hold onto the pond’s edge, alerting nearby residents, Sarun was pulled out only after some delay and rushed to Jubilee Mission Hospital in Thrissur. Sadly, doctors could not revive him.
Sarun was a student of Asharikkad Government Upper Primary School, described as cheerful and active by those who knew him. The entire Cherumkuzhi community is in mourning, especially with the narrow escape of his younger brother underscoring the fragile line between life and tragedy.
This incident has once again raised concerns about safety around unprotected water bodies, especially in rural areas where children often play unsupervised.
