While most children his age focus on school and play, 12-year-old Parwez Ali spends his days outside hospital wards, seeking help to fund his mother’s treatment.
Originally from Faizabad, Uttar Pradesh, Parwez brought his ailing mother, Shabana, to Mumbai after alleging that his father and relatives had neglected her medical needs. The boy has been living with his grandmother in Antop Hill since childhood and was studying in a civic-run school in Wadala before his life took an unexpected turn.
Complex medical condition
Shabana is currently admitted at Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General Hospital (Sion Hospital) and is undergoing treatment for rectourethral and rectovaginal fistulas, a serious and complicated condition.
Doctors stated that she requires abdominal exploration surgery with rectus muscle flap and omental interposition. While treatment at civic hospitals is subsidised, certain costs must be borne by the family. Medical experts estimate that an immediate amount of ₹60,000 is required for surgery, with total expenses potentially reaching ₹1.5 to ₹2 lakh for multiple procedures.
A child forced into adulthood
Two years ago, Shabana underwent a colostomy at KEM Hospital. However, Parwez alleges that treatment was discontinued midway due to financial constraints. Since then, he has been navigating hospitals and seeking assistance to continue her care.
The emotional and financial strain has compelled Parwez to discontinue his education. “I stopped going to school a year ago. I have to run around asking for help and sit beside my mother. I just pray she recovers so I can study again,” he said.
Hope amid hardship
Despite overwhelming challenges, Parwez remains determined. Doctors and social workers have acknowledged his resilience, and efforts are underway to mobilise financial support.
His story is a reminder of the quiet struggles faced by vulnerable families and the urgent need for compassionate healthcare support.
