US President Donald Trump has announced that his administration is dispatching a naval medical vessel to Greenland, citing concerns that several people in the Arctic territory are “falling sick”.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the initiative is being coordinated with Jeff Landry, whom he previously appointed as a special envoy to the region. He stated that a “great hospital boat” was on its way to assist those “not being taken care of”.

The announcement was accompanied by imagery of the USNS Mercy, one of the US Navy’s primary hospital ships.

Illness details not disclosed

While describing the move as humanitarian, the President did not provide specifics about the nature of the reported health crisis. No official statements have clarified the scale of illness or the medical challenges being addressed.

Governor Landry responded publicly, expressing pride in working with the President on what he termed an important issue.

Geopolitical backdrop

The announcement comes amid renewed US interest in Greenland, a semi-autonomous Danish territory strategically located in the Arctic. Trump has in recent months reiterated his desire for stronger American influence in the region, citing national security concerns.

Denmark has previously rejected suggestions of transferring sovereignty, and discussions around Greenland have drawn international attention due to its geopolitical significance and mineral resources.

While the hospital ship’s mission has been framed as humanitarian, observers note that it unfolds against a backdrop of heightened diplomatic sensitivity in the Arctic.

Further details regarding the vessel’s deployment timeline and operational scope are awaited.
