A tragic incident has shocked residents of New Ramnagar Part-I village in East Sonai, Assam’s Cachar district, where a 15-year-old boy allegedly died by suicide after being scolded by his mother following a family argument.
The deceased has been identified as Sajjad Nur Barbhuiya, the second son of Tajim Uddin Barbhuiya. His body was discovered hanging from a tree branch on the morning of March 2, villagers said.
Argument between brothers led to scolding
According to family members, the incident was preceded by a dispute between Sajjad and his 10-year-old younger brother over a bicycle on Sunday afternoon.
The disagreement reportedly turned into a brief scuffle, after which their mother intervened and scolded Sajjad for fighting.
Following the rebuke, the younger brother returned home with their mother, but Sajjad did not return.
Family members initially believed he might have gone to a neighbour’s house or elsewhere in the village, as he had occasionally stayed out for short periods before.
Father recalls final interaction
Sajjad’s father, Tajim Uddin Barbhuiya, later recounted the last conversation he had with his son before leaving for work on Sunday morning.
“He told me to send the cow to graze in the field as he had to go to school,” the father said.
When Sajjad did not return home by evening, the family began searching nearby areas. They also assumed he might have gone to the mosque to attend Tarabi prayers during Ramadan or to a relative’s house.
Body found by villagers
The next morning, villagers who had gone to graze cattle noticed a body hanging from a tree in a nearby area and alerted others.
When the father reached the spot, he discovered that the body was that of his son.
Police from Sonai Police Station soon arrived at the location and began a preliminary investigation.
Police begin inquiry
Officials conducted an inquest in the presence of a magistrate, and a forensic team collected evidence from the scene.
The body was later sent to Silchar Medical College and Hospital for a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.
The incident has deeply saddened the village community and once again highlighted the emotional struggles that adolescents may face during moments of distress or conflict at home.
