In a tragic incident that has raised concerns about the mental health and working conditions of gig economy workers, a 19-year-old food delivery executive, Pavithran, took his own life on Wednesday in Chennai. The B.Com student was found dead at his residence in Kolathur, reportedly after being scolded by a customer for a delivery delay.

The event occurred on September 11, 2024, when Pavithran was delivering food in Chennai’s Korattur area. Struggling to locate the customer’s house, Pavithran was delayed, which led to a heated confrontation with the customer. Frustrated by the delay, the customer reprimanded him harshly and filed a formal complaint against the service, exacerbating Pavithran’s distress.

On September 13, tensions further escalated when Pavithran, allegedly in a fit of anger, threw a stone at the customer’s residence, breaking a window. This act resulted in the customer lodging a police complaint against him. The situation reportedly pushed Pavithran into a deep emotional crisis, ultimately leading to his decision to end his life.

Pavithran’s Final Note

On September 18, Pavithran was found hanging from the ceiling of his home by his family. The Kolathur Police, who arrived at the scene, recovered the body and sent it to Kilpauk Government Hospital for an autopsy. A suicide note, purportedly written by Pavithran, was found at the residence.

In the note, Pavithran expressed his profound distress, stating that the customer’s harsh treatment had driven him into depression. “The reason for my death – I went into depression after being scolded by the person during the delivery. More deaths will occur as long as such women exist,” he wrote.
