A horrifying child neglect case from Indiana has sparked outrage after a two-year-old boy was found dead in deeply distressing conditions, with investigators alleging he had eaten pieces of diapers and drywall due to extreme hunger.

The child was identified as Erik Reichard.

Authorities said his parents, Trevor Reichard-Hayes, 39, and Katherine Carter, 31, have been arrested and charged with murder and child neglect.

Child found after emergency call

Police responded to a 911 call from the family home in Tell City on March 31 after the father reported the toddler was not breathing.

Emergency teams attempted CPR, but the child was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators said there were indications the boy may have been dead for several hours before help was sought.

Severe starvation and dehydration alleged

Court records reportedly state the child was severely malnourished and dehydrated, weighing only around 15 pounds — nearly half the expected weight for his age.

Police allege he had consumed pieces of diapers and drywall, suggesting prolonged hunger and extreme neglect.

Officials also found sores and insect bite-like marks on his body.

House described as filthy

Investigators said the home was in deplorable condition, with faeces on floors, scattered waste and insect infestation in children’s rooms.

In contrast, the parents’ bedroom was reportedly clean and organised.

Other children removed

Two other children living in the house were taken into protective custody. One child was reportedly hospitalised with malnutrition and dehydration.

Case shocks community

The tragedy has renewed concerns about child abuse, hidden neglect and the urgent need for early intervention to protect vulnerable children
