In a touching display of love and humility, a 93-year-old farmer from Jalna district, Maharashtra, has captured the hearts of millions after a video of him buying a mangalsutra for his wife went viral. Dressed in a simple white dhoti-kurta and cap, Nivrutti Shinde walked into a jewellery store in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar with his wife, Shantabai, during their pilgrimage to Pandharpur for Ashadhi Ekadashi.
At first, store employees mistook the elderly couple for people seeking help due to their modest appearance. But when Shinde gently expressed his desire to buy a mangalsutra for his lifelong partner, emotions ran high.
The store owner, moved by the rare gesture of love and devotion, decided to gift the sacred necklace to the couple. Though Shinde offered ₹1,120, the owner only accepted ₹20 as a symbolic token.
“I was touched by his sincerity. He gave me his savings with folded hands, saying he wanted to buy something special for his wife. I couldn’t charge him fully. I just took ₹20 with blessings,” said the shopkeeper.
The video of the moment has garnered over 20 million views on social media, resonating with users for its raw emotion and pure intent.
Locals say the couple, though they have a son, travel on foot supporting each other, often depending on goodwill during pilgrimages.
Their enduring companionship in old age stands as a moving reminder of love’s simplicity and strength.
