A small act of kindness on a long-haul flight has turned into a lifelong cross-cultural bond for Raj Dabre, whose heartfelt story of finding a “Japanese mom and dad” has touched thousands online.

A chance seatmate encounter

Dabre was travelling home in 2019 while recovering from severe influenza when he noticed the elderly Japanese man seated beside him struggling with the in-flight entertainment system. The man wanted Japanese subtitles but spoke little English, leaving the cabin crew puzzled. Fluent in Japanese, Dabre stepped in, fixed the issue in seconds and sparked a conversation that lasted almost the entire flight.

The coincidence grew deeper: the couple’s home in Japan was just a 20-minute bike ride from Dabre’s. Before landing, the man handed Dabre his business card and invited him to call.

From a call to a family

Encouraged by his own father, Dabre made the call. What followed was unexpected. He began visiting the couple regularly, staying with them, and—at their insistence—calling them “mom” and “dad”. The bond held strong through the Covid-19 pandemic, offering companionship and normalcy during uncertain times.

The families eventually met when Dabre’s parents visited Japan. In 2023, the relationship came full circle when the Japanese “dad” travelled to India and stood as a witness at Dabre’s church wedding.

A reminder to say hello

Sharing photos and reflections on X, Dabre wrote that destiny often works in quiet ways. “You don’t know who you’ll meet and become close with. Just say hi!” he said—capturing the spirit of a story that began with a language barrier and grew into family.

The post resonated widely, reminding readers that the smallest gestures—helping a stranger on a flight—can sometimes change a life forever.
