Chandigarh: In a deeply moving act of compassion, the family of 18-year-old Surinder Kaur chose to donate her organs after she succumbed to injuries sustained in a road accident, helping give a new lease of life to four people.

Surinder, a resident of Teur village in Kharar, was admitted to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) on August 23 following the accident. Despite medical treatment, she suffered an irreversible neurological injury and was declared brain-stem dead after the prescribed medical assessments.

A heartbreaking decision brings hope

Amid profound grief, Surinder’s mother, Santosh Kaur, consented to the donation of her daughter’s organs and tissues. The decision transformed an unbearable loss for the family into an opportunity for others to live and see.

Both kidneys, the pancreas and corneas were successfully retrieved. One kidney and the pancreas were transplanted together into a 31-year-old man through a simultaneous pancreas-kidney transplant, while the second kidney was given to a 15-year-old recipient at PGIMER. The corneas are expected to restore sight to two other recipients.

One family’s courage touches four lives

Doctors at PGIMER highlighted the importance of timely coordination and multidisciplinary care in making the transplants possible. Two kidney recipients had been undergoing long-term dialysis, making the successful transplantation particularly significant.

Surinder’s story is a reminder that organ donation can turn moments of profound sorrow into hope for others. Her family’s decision has ensured that, even after her untimely death, a part of her continues to give others the chance to live healthier lives.

Organ donation involves the authorised removal and transplantation of organs and tissues after death or, in some cases, through living donation.
