Aadhar verification mandatory for mobile phone connections

New Delhi : Following Supreme court order, Department of telecommunications (DoT) issued a notification on March 24 where telecom operators have been asked to re-verify their existing subscribers — both prepaid and postpaid — through an Aadhaar-based eKYC process by February 6, 2018.

SC order has made Aadhaar-based eKYC verification must for all mobile phone numbers in the country.

DOT had held a meeting with all stake holders including UIDAI, TRAI and PMO representatives to discuss the way forward to implement the SC order on February 13, 2107, the notification mentioned.

Telcos have been directed by the government to intimate their existing subscribers about the Aadhaar-based eKYC re-verification process through all means possible, including through advertisements in newspapers and text messages. The SC order has not received the desired acceptance from TELCO’s due to cost implications.

The licensees have also been directed to send a ‘verification code’ to mobile numbers of subscribers to ensure that SIM cards are physically available with the existing subscribers before initiating the e-KYC process.

The move comes on the heels of Aadhaar being made mandatory for filing income tax returns and applying for a permanent account number (PAN).
