New Delhi: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has declared its intent to contest the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections independently. Gopal Rai, the party’s Delhi convenor, stated that the alliance with Congress was solely for the Lok Sabha elections and clarified that there would be no collaboration with Congress for the Delhi Assembly polls slated for early 2025. Rai’s statement followed a meeting with AAP’s MLAs on Thursday.
Rai reiterated that the alliance, named INDIA, was exclusively for the Lok Sabha elections and emphasized AAP’s commitment to contesting the assembly elections with full vigor. Despite opposition parties uniting under the INDIA bloc to challenge the BJP in the Lok Sabha polls, Rai clarified that this coalition did not extend to the assembly elections.
In the recent Lok Sabha elections, both AAP and Congress failed to secure any seats in Delhi, with the BJP emerging victorious in all seven constituencies.
The upcoming Delhi Assembly elections, anticipated in early 2025, hold significance as Congress had not won a single seat in the 2020 polls. In contrast, AAP secured 62 out of the 70 seats, while BJP managed to secure the remaining eight.
