Kolkata: The ABVP on Tuesday, September 25 burnt effigies of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and demanded the immediate resignation of state Education minister Partha Chatterjee over the killing of two students in Islampur last week.
The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, the student wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh organized a protest march in central Kolkata against the killing of two youths and demanded the resignation of Chatterjee.
As soon as the rally reached Dharmatala crossing, ABVP activists burnt an effigy of the chief minister and shouted slogans against the state government and the police.
The police tried to pacify the crowd but the ABVP activists remained adamant and squatted on the road leading to a melee with the police officials who used force to disperse the crowd.
“The state government for the sake of its appeasement politics had allowed the killing of two youths. The state government has to answer the question or else the Education minister should resign,” ABVP state president Subir Haldar said.
ABVP national general secretary Ashish Chouhan demanded a CBI inquiry into the killing of two students at Darivit High School at Islampur in North Dinajpur district on September 20 to bring out the truth.
“The state government has taken the 12-hour strike called by BJP as a challenge. Our request is instead of taking that as a challenge why don’t the state government keep aside its politics of appeasement. This is a matter of shame that the students of this state are unable to study in their mother tongue Bengali,” Chouhan said.
Two youths have been killed and the culprits are roaming freely as the TMC government doesn’t want to “disturb its vote bank politics”, he said.
The BJP has called for a 12-hour shutdown in West Bengal on September 26 over the death of two students during violence which broke out at Darivit High School on September 20.
