A group of five individuals, including P. A. Sooraj from Kodungallur, is set to embark on a 6,000 km journey across India to raise awareness about the accessibility challenges faced by people with disabilities. The mission, which starts in December, aims to highlight the difficulties in accessing major tourist spots, public spaces, and transport facilities that are often not wheelchair-friendly.
Sooraj, who is the general secretary of the Voice of Disabled organization, has lost mobility below the waist due to a spinal injury. He will drive a three-wheel scooter during the trip, accompanied by his wife, Soumya, who will assist him in getting on and off the vehicle. Their route will cover 12 states, including Haryana, Rajasthan, Goa, Karnataka, and more, with the journey concluding at Dhanushkodi.
The initiative is part of the Accessible India campaign, which is backed by the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, receiving Rs 9 lakh in funding. The group hopes to inspire change by showcasing the importance of making public spaces accessible to all. They will be welcomed by NGOs in each state they visit.
