The Madras High Court on Tuesday granted conditional bail to actors Srikanth and Krishna, arrested in connection with a cocaine smuggling case, offering them a temporary reprieve. Justice M Nirmal Kumar directed both actors to report daily at the Nungambakkam police station until further notice.
Srikanth was arrested on June 23, and Krishna on June 26, based on a confession by the prime accused Pradeep Kumar, who alleged their drug use. However, Srikanth’s counsel, senior advocate John Sathyan, argued that no narcotics were seized from Srikanth and that the arrest was solely based on another’s statement. “He was at home playing with his child when the police took him into custody,” Sathyan said.
Representing Krishna, advocate Infant Dinesh told the court that Krishna complied with summons and appeared for questioning but was arrested without being informed of the reason—violating legal norms. A medical report also showed no trace of drug use in Krishna, he added.
The prosecution, however, claimed the arrests stemmed from revelations made during a separate attempt to murder investigation involving former AIADMK functionary Prasath, which led them to uncover a wider drug network.
With the bail granted, further investigation into the alleged drug ring continues under police supervision.
